Concept design for Amazon Prime, aimed towards their smart TV and Console viewports.

Why?

With the pandemic keeping us at home and in the process opting into more and more streaming services, i noticed Amazon's smart TV and console ports had some UX issues and overall didn't follow and of the loosely established patterns for TVs and consoles.

What Problems?

I made note of some of the differences of the experiences across smart TV and consoles, looking at Netflix, Youtube and Spotify. I then had a quick scrappy over facetime interview/ chat with a friend who also uses the service

  • Navigation makes you go back to the top of the page.
  • The Amazon icon was not consistent or recognisable.
  • No upfront CTA to pick up where you left off on you last show.
  • Navigating to the next season of a show or series is tedious, users just looked for the next series card in the list.
  • “Change Account” CTA did not look like a button.

The Insight

Something that stood out while talking to people was that during the pandemic people watched everything that was available, and spent a great deal of time looking for something to watch. they would jump between different services endlessly searching. While "The Dominoes pizza went cold"

Giving people something to watch while they search seemed like a way to solve this issue while also keeping them on the platform.

A lovely coincidence

Towards the end of the pandemic and lockdowns I noticedthe Amazon Prime application on my PlayStation had gotten and update. I'm happy to report that now the actual app had been improved. Bittersweet but im happy I saw and shared the views of the Amazon designers.
